Joshua “Sonny” “Hale” James Kawelo Halemanu, 88, of Kailua-Kona died Nov. 19. Born in Kaahuhu Homestead, Kohala, he was a retired fire captain with the Honolulu Fire Department, a member of the American Legion and a U.S. Army veteran. Friends may call at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Kalahikiola Church in Kapaau for a 10:30 a.m. funeral service; burial to follow at the Kawelo Halemanu Family Cemetery, 55-1113 Aina Ui Road, Kaahuhu Homestead. Casual attire; flowers OK. Survived by daughters, Terrilynn (Gene) Teves, Maydine Halemanu and Goldie Maldonado; sons, Joshua (Karen) Halemanu, Ainsley Halemanu, Wendell Halemanu and Cornwell Halemanu; sister, Helene Duvauchelle-Halemanu of Molokai; 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild. Shannon Louis Nobuyuki Okamoto, 37, of Keaau died Nov. 26 at the Hilo Medical Center. He was born in Hilo. Private services. Survived by two brothers, Shawn (Jenifer) Okamoto and Joseph Correa, both of Keaau; hanai brother, David Cushing of Hilo; two nieces, two nephews, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Elaine Hisano Kurokawa, 92, of Kamuela died Nov. 26 at her daughter’s home. She was born in Wailea. Private services held. No flowers or koden. Merrill Shigematsu Murakami, 73, of Hilo, died Nov. 23 at his home. Born in St. Louis, he was a retired youth counselor for the Salvation Army Interim Home. Private services held. James Yukio Kaku, 86, of Hilo died Nov. 21 at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Honaunau, he was a retired supervisor for Allied Aggregates and member of Pomaikai Softball Club. Ralph M. Shiyama, 81, of Hawaiian Paradise Park died Nov. 28 at home. Born in Honolulu, he was a former building inspector for the City and County of Honolulu and member of the Waiakea Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Friends may call from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 2629 Kilauea Ave.; memorial service and talk at 2 p.m. No flowers.
